According to "Draper Manuscript Collection," Pages:
82-276 entry from 17S82: Sam'l McColloch lost an arm in a
hunting accident in 1791 near Gallipolis, Ohio. He was Commisary
Sergeant in the War of 1812 serving under John Piatt of
Cincinatti.
Page 276: "From an interview with Reverend George McColloch,
born May 1, 1790. Resides near Zanesfield, Ohio (his place of
origin), son of Samuel McColloch, who died November, 1814, age
47, near Urbana when on a journey to Chillicothe, his home being
in Logan County on the Mad River.
In 1791, when on a hunting trip near Gallipolis, his gun
accidently discharged and shattered his right arm - it was
amputated. He was on many scouting parties at that period. No
particulars. Served as commissary under John Piatt of Cincinatti
in War 1812. He was two or three times chosen a member of the
Ohio Legislature and attended at Chillicothe and had previously
served as Sheriff of Ohio Co, VA."
It appears that after Nancy's death, the youngest children were
sent to the home of
their Uncle, John Boggs, on the Scioto, Ohio, and they were
reared by him. John Boggs married Nancy's sister, Sarah McMechen.
It also may be that when Samuel died any remaining minor
children might have also been sent to their Uncle John, to be
raised.

SOLOMON McCOLLOCH, farmer;
P. O., Rushsylvania; was born Nov. 17, 1832, in
this county; his grandfather, Samuel McColloch
was a native of Virginia, and moved with his
family (except a son, John, who remained in
Virginia) to this county and settled in what is
now Monroe Tp. in 1803; the children were
George, Benjamin; William and Jane. Here the
family grew up. and William moved into Piqua,
where he died; he had one son and one daughter;
the former was killed in the late Rebellion.
Benjamin never married, and died in 1873, in
Crawford Co. George, the eldest (and Solomon's
father), is the only survivor of the family; he
was born May 1, 1790, in what is now Ohio Co.,
Va.; he still resides where they settled when
the family came to this county. During his early
life his attention was devoted to farming, and
when quite young he married, which event was
solemnized June 8, 1809, with Nancy, eldest
daughter of George Henry. He was a native of
Virginia, and came here with his family of four
boys and fire girls about 1806. Mr. McColloch's
fatally consisted of eleven children, nine of
whom lived to maturity; five of whom are
surviving and reside in this county, viz:
George, Benjamin, John. Mary. L, now Mrs.
Marquis, and Solomon. Being a man of
considerable ability, and a devoted Christian,
he was called as minister to care for the
spiritual wants of his people, and was ordained
in 1829, a Baptist of the "old
school," his first charge being the
"Tharp's Run" congregation. Solomon
lived with his parents until about 19 years of
age, when he entered the store of Patterson
& McCollbch, at Bellefontaine, as clerk, and
remained with them about two years; he then
returned to the farm and worked about two years,
when he was employed by Riddle & Rutan, of
Bellefontaine, to go into Iowa and buy and ship
hogs for them direct to New York, which business
he followed for one year. After his return he
married Julia A. Wonders, Jan. 1, 1857; she was
born Oct. 30, 1835, in Cumberland Co., Pa., but
came here with her parents before she was two
years old. They have three children - Norah E.,
Charles E. and Mary J. When they were married he
rented a farm of his brother, where they lived
seven years, and then moved to what was the
Dawson estate, in April, 1864, and in 1869 they
bought 229 1/4 acres of good land, which he is
getting in a good state of cultivation. Mr.
McColloch is a member of the Lodge of I. O. O.
F. No. 576, at West Mansfield.

of beauty.

NOTE: This page is in a stage of flux at this
time. I am
in the process of verifying as much information as I
can through census records and this has already
provided some corrections and interesting situations.
More census transcripts will be added frequently.
The "Draper Manuscripts", "Doddridge's
Notes" and the like provide important clues in
ancestral research, flesh out information and are colorful narratives, but they are
on occasion incorrect.
